About Me:   My name is Brooke Lundgren and I am the 6th grade social studies teacher on team Organization. I also teach one ESL social studies class.  This is my fourteenth year teaching in Minneapolis Public Schools and my fifth year teaching at Sanford Middle School. In my years before coming to Sanford I taught at Edison High School, Folwell Middle School, Nellie Stone Johnson and Anthony Middle School.  I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology in 1998 and I also earned my M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Minnesota in 2001.  In 2008 I earned a second teaching license in ESL from Hamline University.   I especially enjoy teaching in the Minneapolis Public schools because I am a product of MPS having graduted from Southwest High School.  It's great to be able work within the learing community that has been such an important part of shaping who I am.  I became a teacher because I wanted to work in a profession that I feel makes a positive difference in the world and I really enjoy working with young people and hopefully inspiring them to be life long learners!

I love to spend time with my family, read and travel.  My husband is an elementary school art teacher in Edina and we have two children, two cats and a dog.  Our son, Georgie is 7 and a first grader at Barton.  Our daughter, Violet, will soon be 5 and will be starting kindergarten in the fall of 2013.  Our cats are Milo and Otis and Jewel is our dog.  We love to spend time on the North Shore of Lake Superior and at our cabin on the St. Croix River in the summer.  My husband and I are avid travelers and look forward to exciting adventures abroad now that our kids are a little older.  I studied abroad in Kenya and Tanzania when I was in college and taught in Honduras for 6 months my second year of teaching.  I have also traveled to China, Amsterdam,  Costa Rica, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and was lucky enough to be the lead teacher for  one of Sanford's international trips in the spring of 2012 to Belize!

Curriculum:  This year we are studying Minnesota Studies.  We began the year with a "Professional Student" unti during which we learned reading and writing strategies that are helpful in social studies.  We then did a unit on the 2012 election and students made their own campaign videos on the candidate of their choice.   After our election unit, we delved into our Minnesota history topics and  learned about Dakota and Ojibwe cultres, the fur trade and the treaties that were signed between the U.S. and the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples.  We are finishing the year with an econimics curriculum called "BizTown" wich will culminate in a day long simulation where students get to practice being adults for a day (working, paying bills, making financial decisions).
